Tom McCall Waterfront Park
Two-mile-long Tom McCall Waterfront Park flanks the west bank of the Willamette River, hosting summer festivals and concerts. The Salmon Street Springs Fountain swarms with frolicking kids in warm weather. Toward the north end of the park is the Japanese-American Historical Plaza, a memorial to Japanese Americans who were interned by the US government during WWII. Across the river is another great walking strip, the Eastbank Esplanade.
Higgins
If you spring for one fancy meal, do it here. Chef Greg Higgins consistently wins restaurant-of-the-year honors for his innovative preparation of fresh, locally grown organic ingredients. The cheaper bar menu includes downtown's best burger.
International Rose Test Gardens
The huge Washington Park complex contains the International Rose Test Gardens with 400 types of roses and good views.More than just a beautiful public park, the rose gardens are also the testing grounds for the American Rose Society and All-American Rose selections. Over 400 rose varieties are contained in the permanent gardens, including many old and rare varieties. From June to September, the scent and colours are seductively overpowering.
Portland Building & Portlandia
No downtown building has drawn more notoriety than the Portland Building, designed by postmodern architect Michael Graves to house city government bureaus. This blocky, pastel-coloured edifice is considered the world's first major structure in the postmodern style.
Imago Theater
This theatre company is well-regarded for its innovative puppet theatre, including the long-running 'Frogz, Lizards, Orbs and Slinkys.' It's worth checking out for an art fix that's distinctly different.
Classical Chinese Garden
There are a few token Chinese restaurants, but the main attraction is the Classical Chinese Garden. It's a one-block haven of tranquility, reflecting ponds and manicured greenery. Free tours available with admission.
BridgePort Brew Pub Bakery
Portland's oldest microbrewery, BridgePort, is a vast gathering place in a red-brick warehouse. The beer is top-notch (try the great Black Strap Stout or the flagship Blue Heron). Recent renovations add fine dining and breakfast service to the brewpub's assets.
Portland Art Museum
Just across the park is the Portland Art Museum. Excellent exhibits include Native American carvings, Asian and American art and English silver. The museum also houses the Whitsell Auditorium, a first-rate theater that frequently screens rare or international films.
Old Wives' Tales
This beloved cornerstone of progressive Portland dining serves upscale organic comfort food such as tofu scrambles and parchment-baked halibut with wild rice. Parents may want to take advantage of the children's playroom off to the side.
Shanghai Tunnel
This mandatory hipster hangout is an underground den carved into the tunnels beneath the streets of Portland. The ground floor's always dead, so take the creepy staircase down to a smoke-filled booze purgatory, where service may be stiff but so are the drinks. A pan-Asian menu is served all night long.
